Our homes become a focal point again, as we move back indoors and start thinking about curtains on those large windows, that once let in vast amounts of sunshine, but now just look dark, cold and lack any cosiness. The floor rug you kept meaning to buy, but seemed so irrelevant during the summer months, now becomes a priority, and the all-important cushions and throws on the sofa, come back out, for relaxing nights in front of the TV.

Whilst some feel the passing of summer somewhat depressing, here at AbFab we embrace the change in the seasons, enjoying all the new colours we see in nature, working with rich, warm tactile fabrics and cosy nights in front of a fire. We love to see the deep rich colours coming back into schemes, with berries, pumpkin and conker colours being noticeable favourites this year. These colours work so well on a plush velvet, a textured boucle and a snug fake fur. All so rich and beautifully irresistible to the touch!

The dreaded C word seems to creep ever earlier too, and whist this is daunting to see in the shops already, it does help our clients to think ahead and get their orders into us. Our bespoke and made-to-measure items require at least 4 to 6 weeks for measuring, ordering and making, so remember if you need it for Christmas, don’t leave it too late!

Reupholster Versus Buying New

As we begin to see the first signs of Spring here at AbFab, clients are beginning to think about refreshing and updating their interiors, particularly, their upholstered pieces of furniture. As a result, we are getting lots of clients asking us about our sofa collection or the possibility of reupholstering an existing piece of furniture.

There are some pro and cons to reupholstering an existing piece, and we like to make our clients aware of this before they go this route. We have both an in-house upholsterer, taking on smaller jobs, such as dining chair recovers or footstools and an external upholsterer, who has the space in a dedicated workshop to reupholster larger pieces, such as armchairs and sofas.

Upholstery is a labour intense job, and this is where much of the cost comes from. Stripping a piece of furniture is time consuming, but a necessary part of the process to give a clean and professional finish. Until the layers of old fabric are stripped back, you are unaware what you will find beneath and what condition the foam, frame or other components will be in. Costs can increase significantly if more work than originally anticipated is necessary, and it is always worth considering the age of the piece before going through with a reupholstery job.

Whilst we are keen to reduce and reuse as much as we can, it’s worth considering if the original item would be cheaper to replace or reupholster. If it’s the former, consider donating to a furniture recycle centre rather than just dumping it. Furniture of sentimental value or older, well-made pieces should certainly be considered for re-upholstery before being disposed of.

Always have your upholsterer look at the item in question, ask them how much fabric will be required for the recover, and if the job is worth taking on. They should be honest with you and be able to give you a rough estimate for the job.

If a new sofa is what you are looking for, then why not come and look at our sofa collection displayed in our showroom. We work with trade suppliers, Tamerisk, who supply and make quality, hardwood frame, UK-made sofas. Their showroom is based locally in the Cotswolds, with all their sofas being bespoke made to your requirements in their Long Eaton mill, a renowned centre for upholstery. Our clients have been extremely impressed with not only the finished product, but also the customer service provided. Fabrics, fillings and frames are all made to a high standard, providing not only comfort but longevity to the sofas and chairs supplied.

Why not pop in and see us and we can discuss your requirements and help you make the correct decision.

Here at AbFab we are sometimes questioned on our pricing and asked if any discounts can be applied to a quote. As a bespoke design service, we like to offer a personalised and professional service that is unique to our small business and takes you through each step of your design journey. This is something we really pride ourselves on and cannot be matched by larger, national companies, such as John Lewis or Dunelm.

In this blog we would like to offer an insight into our design process, and make it clearer to you, as the customer, as to why a quote may be more expensive than you have seen elsewhere.

As a small team, each job is handled personally from beginning to end by just one person. We therefore become very invested in each project and get to know you and your home well. A measuring service is carried out initially, ensuring your window treatments are a perfect fit. This is particularly important when we work in older properties and cottages, where windows are by no means a standard size! This is often not the case with other made to measure services, where you are asked to provide your own measurements. We then work within your budget to find the perfect fabric for your scheme. We have carefully selected several beautiful and quality fabric houses to work with, offering a wide variety of choice and a solution to suit your requirements is always obtained. The linings, headings and other features of your curtains or blinds are all discussed with you, and you have full control of the finished look. We would advise if we felt something wouldn’t work, but generally it is the customer’s choice. This is certainly not always the case, and often why clients have sought us out, as they have been unable to achieve the look they are after through a more mainstream approach.

Our makers are all local to us and have had many years’ experience in their trade. They provide high quality results and consider each job carefully - ensuring precise pattern matching, thoughtful design placement, perfect pleat size and hand sewn finishing. As each job is carried out by a human rather than a machine, a unique and original result is achieved.

The process does not end there. We also offer high quality hardware and accessories to ensure the finished look is perfect for you. We fit any tracks or poles you have chosen for your scheme. This is an important process as part of our design service, and one which is often overlooked. Its crucial the right hardware is used to ensure the weight of the curtains is fully supported - the last thing anyone needs are their curtains coming down!

Once your curtains or blinds have been made, we will come back to your home to fit and, if necessary, steam them, allowing us to ensure we have left you with a perfect product that you are happy with. We are confident a perfect fit will be achieved, however, if this is not the case, we will always alter and adjust accordingly till you are delighted with the results.

As we are a small and friendly team, we are always available for any queries or questions you may have, following on from the work we have carried out. Our door is always open, and we are happy to help if required. We have found though that most of our clients go on to enjoy their design schemes for many years to come – and in fact often return to AbFab to have further work with us. Recommendations are common too and it is always a pleasure to work with new clients that have come to us through family or a friend.

We hope this provides you with a more detailed look at how we work with our clients, but if you have further questions, or would like to initiate a design consultation with us, why not pop into the design studio and have a chat.

What an incredible journey it’s been, and we are delighted with the results. As you can see from the photos below, it is a stunning home, and the owners are extremely proud of it.

Our clients got in touch with us prior to any work starting, so we were able to work closely with the builders and architect from the very beginning of the build. This is the perfect time to get us involved as it is always good for us to be part of the planning stages.

In this case, an existing building was demolished and a new one built in its place. We were fully involved in all areas of the project, from flooring choices, lighting plans and final light fittings, bathroom design and layout, bedroom layout, sourcing and supplying bespoke furniture, paint colours, bespoke curtains and much more. By getting us involved from the very start, the clients were well informed about how their interiors would both look and function.

The bespoke curtains for this large feature window required careful planning and fitting due to the nature of the scale and design of the window.

It’s been another busy month here at Ab Fab!

As a small business, we carefully hand-pick our makers, choosing only the best and highly-experienced makers available to us. Our curtains are beautifully handmade and finished to an extremely high standard. The attention to detail is very important to our team and our clients appreciate the high finish we achieve.

As our homes become more open plan, double height ceilings are becoming very fashionable. With this scenario a large expanse of wall becomes available to us. As designers it’s important that we find a suitable wall covering, so the area isn’t bare and sparse looking. In one clients home we used some wallpaper panels to create interest and accentuate the ceiling height. Rather than applying directly to the wall, we instead used a poster hanging system to create a real wow factor!

Wallpaper panels are becoming a popular choice amongst our clients; they are often a more cost-effective choice, provide a high visual impact, cover a large area and create a mural effect rather than a repeating pattern.

One way to help clients visualise their scheme is to put together a moodboard. This can be done with photos on a computer generated moodboard, but if fabrics and wallpapers have been chosen, a physical moodboard with their choices can be used instead. This gives our clients a really clear and accurate visual aid to how their finished scheme will work. We love this one we put together in a tray, using the client’s wallpaper, fabric, paint and finishing touches. A really fun and helpful representation of the scheme!

We’re looking forward to the summer holidays here at Ab Fab, and then to getting the showroom ready for autumn, with some new schemes and inspiration.

Earlier this month we fitted a full living room scheme, bringing a modern twist to an old barn conversion, but sticking to our client's eclectic tastes. The starting point of the scheme, a bright orange vintage velvet chair, paired with bottle green velvet sofas meant we had to carefully choose a fabric that incorporated the two colours. The Harlequin palm fabric worked perfectly and complemented our client's eclectic taste.

We used a plain orange cotton to pipe the tie backs and create the tabs for the tab top curtains, this worked well and made the curtains look that little more unique, we also brought orange on to the sofas with cushions made in a gorgeous Osborne and Little fabric, which followed through to the centre of the room with a reupholstered footstool. Here at Abfab we are all about sustainability, as we had a little extra fabric left from the curtains we were able to use it in making up x2 extra cushions which could be added to the space. Images can be seen below.

After working on the living room scheme our client called us back to design made-to-measure blinds in their recently renovated hallway space, we brought the tones through with a fabric including the burnt oranges and the greens – Villa Nova Potting shed was the perfect fabric made up in to romans, this also looked fab as the hallway windows looked out on to a beautiful garden filled with wild flowers.

Client comments -

"Ab Fab by name, Ab Fab by nature!

We used Claire and Hetty primarily to help us work out how to refresh our tired living room. They were full of good ideas, having been very good at getting us to focus on our likes and dislikes on colour and style. The palate they came up with for the curtains, blinds, walls and sofas was absolutely us. Beyond that their delivery was excellent: good communication, additional ideas, clarity on timings and pricing (and adroit flexibility and understanding on Sofa delivery timescales when we delayed the process for new carpets). We certainly wouldn't have ended up with the room we really wanted without their help. Easily 5 stars!"

We are currently working on lots more interior schemes which we will be sharing over the next few months, regular updates can also be seen on our Instagram!

The Ab Fab Team

We look forward to lots of new fabrics, wallpapers and colours to be released from our trusty suppliers, but before we get excited for new interior beginnings let's take a look back at our final job, completed in December 2022.

We feel very privileged to have worked on some stunning houses, ranging from 17th century Manor houses, to luxurious country estates, we really have seen it all! Our final project of the year took place in the Cotswolds, a typical Cotswold stone home with original rustic beams and large stone fireplaces. We worked on the family living room, creating a welcoming stylish space, we incorporated Osborne and Little Fabrics throughout, the cushions and bespoke seat pad made to fit the original Cotswold stone window seat. We dressed the windows in a complementing Ian Mankin Herringbone linen, handsewn by our fantastic craftswomen, in a double pinch pleat. Take a look at the images below for a peak at the interior scheme.

We're incredibly thankful to all our clients that have supported us during this past year and we look forward to all that 2023 has to bring.

The Ab Fab Team.

The last few months at Ab Fab have been the busiest to date, our Junior Designer Hetty has finished training and started working full time taking on full houses for clients. We wanted to share with you a project she has recently worked on, this new build property was empty and had no personal touches. Hetty worked closely with the client to gain an understanding of their style to bring their home to life.

Today we are going to look at the living room. This room incorporated a large French door which needed softening, we decided the best way to do this was to create wave curtains filling the entirety of the wall. Once this decision was made the fun of fabric choices began, we wanted to go for a natural timeless fabric and therefore chose a design from Camengo. The natural back cloth and slight gold shimmer added warmth to the room, creating a cosier space for our client.

When hanging our clients curtains we also styled the room, this is something that we like to do as moving ornaments, re-plumping cushions and draping a throw can have a massive impact on the room. Our client was thrilled with the final scheme.

Now for a little update on our showroom, it's safe to say that Christmas has well and truly arrived in the showroom so why not pop in for a bit of xmas home inspo!

See you soon!

The Ab Fab Team.

We have been at the heart of this project since the creation of its floor plan. From the beginning of renovation we have helped our clients choose flooring, kitchen finishes, bathroom fittings and tiling from the choices given by the house builder. We also assisted our clients with the fit of the house, this involves all the furniture, from handmade, bespoke sofas styled with designer cushions and throws, to lighting pendants carefully chosen to work with the scheme designed by us. As our clients were not living in the UK at the time, we fitted the house out ready for them to move straight in, relieving the stress out of moving in to a new home making the whole process much more enjoyable for them.

Now to get in to the design…

New builds can often feel uncharacteristic, however the Oxford new build was anything but. By working closely with our clients we were able to gain an understanding of their style and develop it further when designing mood boards, which gave our clients a visualisation of how their home could look.

We created a luxurious contemporary living room scheme with navy blue paneling which off sets the voluptuous stone coloured sofa, the final colour we added to the space is rust, this has been brought in by using Harlequin's new fabric collection in bespoke-made cushions and curtains. The image below shows our mood board and the start of the living room furbished, (as this property is a new build, paneling will be added and painted navy after a year to let the home settle.)

Get in contact today for our expert advice on creating a home out of your house.

The Ab Fab Team.

This space has been designed with clean modern lines created by the white marble work top that sits perfectly alongside the smart navy blue kitchen cabinets. The kitchen hints to the history of the house with the element of exposed Cotswold stone which is on display at the top of the walls, elevating your eyes upward making the room taller and grander, adding to that industrial New York apartment style that is so in, yet so timeless.

The oak flooring perfectly complements the exposed oak beams which add lots of warmth to the room, the oak flooring runs through the whole of the ground floor, making the kitchen run smoothy into the snug situated at the end of the room, this space has been designed with an industrial twist in mind, a modern black log burner with a grand exposed flu catches your eye and creates a cosy intimate corner in what is an open plan living space, it really is the perfect place to snuggle up with a nice cup of tea.

We will share more on this labour of love in the following few months, but for now have a wonderful February, we will see you in March.

The Ab Fab Team.

During the past year at Ab Fab we have been working on a very special project, in fact its our largest project yet. A beautiful classic Cotswold home redesigned with a showstopping glass extension creating a contrasting space. We assisted our client to bring her home to life with a number of showroom and home consultations. Here at Ab Fab we really get to know our clients on a personal level, this allows us to understand their style, and the ambiance they want to create in their home, it Is this element of our customer service that allows us to create beautiful cosy homes.

We have assisted with the Cotswold’s project from right at the beginning, from choosing fabrics, colours and furniture to turn the house in to a home. The heart of the home, the kitchen is made from hand painted wooden cabinets, in soft neutral taupe and invisible green, these paint choices complement the floral print designers guild fabric that we then used throughout the entirety of the open plan glass extension. We pulled out pinks and greens from the designers guild fabric and spread them throughout the upholstery, from cushions to redesigned swivel chairs and the boot room bench seating. We then took softer tones of these colours throughout the original Cotswold home for example a soft pink guest bathroom, and forest green office space. Here at Ab Fab we work with Little Greene, it’s this brand that allowed us to bring the cotswold home to life, with colours in different tones so that they can be used in modern and traditional spaces.

The final room we would like to share with you is the Living room. Designer Claire worked closely with the client to create a luxurious cosy space, with gentle golds and grounding greens the overall feel of the room is tranquil and relaxing, The colour used throughout the living room is slaked lime, pared with a green grey crushed velvet handmade sofa and statement leopard armchairs creating a luxurious tranquil space to chill out in after a long day.

We hope you enjoy these images as much as we loved bringing our clients home to life.

The Ab Fab Team
Claire, Ange, Hetty and Cathy

Since re-opening the showroom we have had a new batch of fabric books delivered from multiple brands giving us lots of inspiration for new interior schemes. Here at Ab Fab we have wonderful customers with such a variety of homes, from 16th century cottages, to modern newbuilds, our new books cater for all!

Firstly, the new collections from one of our favourite brands, Camengo, has brought much joy to us and our customers. Its array of bright, bold fabrics from the collection Paradis Print has been a popular option for our clients that love flamboyant interiors. The second Camengo book that we have oozed over is San Francisco, with a collection of unique geometric shapes in an array of colours, this book has been a popular choice for our new build customers, its fun shapes and straight lines create a clean but fun feeling to every type of room. The final book of Camengo's new collection is Jade, it's safe to say that the Ab Fab team has completely fallen in love with its intricate embroidery and soft pastel colours, this collection of fabric includes soft colours, Japanese patterns with details of willow trees which represent balance and harmony, key features that we look for in interior schemes! The Jade collection is a fab option for bedroom schemes as it creates a calm atmosphere.

Another brand that has blown us away with their latest collection is ROMO and Villa Nova. With new shades of our most popular fabric Hanna and lots of lovely new designs to woo over, this brand really has pulled out all the stops. We love the combination of soft greens, gentle neutrals and peach tones! This colour scheme works well in client's homes that are nestled within the Cotswolds, as it brings out the beauty of the fields and meadows surrounding. The Fabric ‘The Potting Shed’ incorporates gorgeous colour ways and shows an idyllic setting, this fabric would work beautifully as cushions, curtains or roman blinds in an orangery overlooking a beautiful garden. This brand has also brought out some gorgeous new voiles. Over the past few months voiles have become so popular, whether they are used as a dress curtain, to dim the sunlight coming through or to soften hard lines of a bi fold. There new voiles were loved so much that one of our own designers has had it made in to curtains for her own home!

The final brand we are excited to be sharing with you is Clarke and Clarke, their latest collection Pomarium is a firm favourite for summer, with its funky patterns and sorbet shades it makes any type of room that little more fun. Our 2 favourite fabrics from this collection are the embroidered fruits, from luscious lemons, zesty toned oranges, bright green limes and huge pink grapefruits these fabrics bring an element of fun to any room, but would work particularly well within kitchens, dining rooms, garden rooms, and rooms with lots of light, here at Ab Fab we could pair these flamboyant fabrics with complementing paint colours from Little Greene.

Thank you so much for reading this blog post! If you feel like your home needs a freshen up in time for summer, book for a client consultation today, or pop in to our showroom for a browse!

We will see you soon!

The Ab Fab Team

Opening Hours
Monday – Friday 9.30am - 5pm
Saturday 10am - 5pm
Sunday 11am - 4pm

Hello everyone,

We would firstly like to thank all our clients who have supported us during the last few months, we feel so grateful that we can carry on making your houses your homes. Since we are now back in the Ab Fab showroom and studio we thought it's about time we updated you on our latest projects that we completed during lockdown! During the lockdown we had to adapt our methods to bring our interior skills to our clients in the safest way possible, thus leading us to starting virtual design consultations! Over face time and emails we were able to create beautiful spaces for our clients in a Covid safe way, here are some of the jobs we completed using our virtual consultations…

The first project we would like to share with you is a country contemporary living room, we created a mood board for our clients giving them a feel of how their new build living room could be made unique. We designed the space with beautiful Cole and Sons Woods wallpaper, wool cushions and curtains and a beautiful antique leather mirror. The final room was a complete transformation, and our client absolutely loved her new cosy country living room!

Another project that we are excited to share with you is a cottage guest bedroom, we worked with the client to find a fabric that would work with his traditional 16th century cottage, and add a bit of colour in to it. We used a beautiful embroidered floral fabric from Clarke and Clarke for the made to measure roman blind and a complementing fabric for the cushions, although it was only a small job it felt great that we were still able to help our client create a warm welcoming room ready for when he can have guests once more.

The final project that we would like to share with you is a Contemporary Living room design. We designed the room with a roman blind and matching curtains with a block colour leading edge, the final product created a smart sophisticated look that our client loved!

Thank you so much for reading our latest blog, we are looking forward to seeing you in the Ab Fab design studio!

Ange, Claire and Hetty x

Hello Readers of AbFab

Firstly, we would like to say happy new year! The ab fab team are back at work, although we may be working from home and our showroom can’t be open. We are still able to assist our lovely customers via online zoom paint, wallpaper, and fabric consultations. As we enter into the new year we have seen a drastic change in interior styles and client’s needs. We thought we would share our interior predictions with you all, we’re sure you will be as fascinated as us and would like to bring some of these design aspects into your own home.

Quirky Powder Rooms

During the first lockdown of 2020 we assisted multiple clients with finding the perfect wallpaper to spruce up their downstairs loo, or as we like to call it the powder room. This space is such a fantastic place to bring in fun quirky wallpaper, because after all when we are able to have guests again, they always remember the loo they go to! We have created gorgeous powder rooms with Cole and Son wallpaper, and matching blinds in a modern build, as well as a gorgeous William Morris Pure wallpaper in a traditional 16th century home which gave the space a completely different look but still complemented its traditional features, both clients are still besotted with the spaces created! If you’re thinking of sprucing up your downstairs loo why not add a funky wallpaper, check out our Instagram for more inspiration.

Outside/Inside Living

Yes, its true bringing the outside in has been a huge trend over the last few years, but this year we have seen a huge increase in making the most of outside, maybe it’s the because of our national lockdowns but people have cherished being outside! This is a trend that is definitely going to follow us in to 2021 Whether it’s a cosy seating area under a pagoda with chimineas and fire pits, or an outside kitchen more and more people are taking pleasure in being their gardens!

Multifunctional Space

2020 has caused the majority of our population to work from home, thus finding ways of creating at home offices or work spaces. Over the past 6 months we have been lucky enough to design office spaces for a lot of our clients, sometimes its by adding a desk to a spare bedroom, or completely redesigning a room with new bespoke shelfing units creating the perfect at-home work space.

For some of us at home offices will be part of our homes for the forceable future, consequently making it a high trend for 2021, if you’re looking for a bit of at home office inspiration check out our Instagram page @abfabdesignerinteriors

Light, Clean Spaces

We believe that in 2021 people will be making the most of lighting, Having a lighter rooms with good feng shui and floaty soft fabrics creating a relaxing inspiring space to play, relax and now due to Covid 19 work. We have seen an increase in people buying light toned fabrics a huge trend is the paints that lighten up rooms, but still work with warm Hygge lighting, for example Portland Stone by Little Green.

Thank you to all of our customers that have supported us during the past year, we are looking forward to the projects that 2021 has to offer. Changing our usual design consultations to zoom calls making sure we offer fantastic service to give our clients advice and supplying the key touches that make their houses homes.

After a long month we are so exited to be back in the showroom and design studio, just in time for the run up to Christmas. All though lockdown may have been challenging at times, we were kept busy with lots of lovely projects for our clients which we are excited to be sharing with you today.

Children’s Nursery

During lockdown this particular client decided to re decorate her children’s bedroom, our co director Claire worked with the client to bring the children’s scheme to life. The use of a fun wall mural, complementing curtains and beautiful floral cushions created a secret garden feel to the space!

Curtains

Another project completed over lockdown are a pair of handsewn bespoke curtains. These curtains have been made with an interlining, which is perfect for our clients with grade 1 and 2 listed buildings as windows often can’t be changed, the interlining acts as a barrier against any cold drafts! Lined with a blackout lining, these curtains aren’t just beautiful they are practical too! We designed these curtains with a triple pleat, creating a traditional feel. It’s safe to say they hung beautifully with their bespoke hand-painted baroque wooden 45mm pole, all supplied through Ab Fabs click and collect service throughout lockdown.

Cushions

The final product we will be sharing in this “projects we did in lockdown” blog post is these gorgeous cushions, our clients sent us images of her living room and we got to work find the perfect fabrics to complement her space, our client loved the different combinations of cushion sizes and fabrics that we came up with and we got to work on making the bespoke cushions, which were then delivered to her home.

We would like to thank our Clients that have continued to support us through these hard times, we are so grateful that we get to work with each and every one of you bringing your interior schemes to life.

Stay safe, The team at Ab Fab
Claire, Angela and Hetty.

As the weather changes so do our interior schemes, just as we say good bye to the wonderful array of green trees and bright colours we say hello to the beautiful array of rusts, coppers, reds and golden leaves.

Just as we did with summer, making the most of the outside we can do the same in the new season this is by bringing the outside in with warm colours and home accessories. Why not add a chunky quilted throw to your space from our Latest Camengo

Nuit D’ete collection – a fabric book filled with beautiful chunky quilted fabric, or why not switch out your cushions with some that complement Autumn Winter – Velvet and wool can bring a cosy element to your space as well as adding texture.

Here at Ab Fab we have embraced the change in season with a new Autumn winter scheme and window display. We decided to create a window display that is packed with cosy but glamorous vibes- this year it’s more important than ever to make the most of our own spaces, our homes. As we can’t go out as much why not bring out inn! We have redesigned an old bedside cabinet in to a simplistic wine bar, styled with quaint gin bottles and crystal glasses, using mirrors to reflect making the space seem larger. This works so well against are rust coloured curtains and statement Cole and Sons wallpaper, having a space where you can entertain in your own home is the new normal, even if it is just 6 people!

Why not make the most of autumn winter in your home, get in contact to book a design consultation.

Stay safe,

The team at
Ab Fab.
